Third Street, San Rafael

The goal of the Third Street Rehabilitation Project is to create a safer and more efficient corridor for vehicles, pedestrians and bicyclists from Grand Street to the intersection with Fourth Street near the Miracle Mile. Improvements may include roadway resurfacing, transit and traffic flow improvements, curb ramp construction, striping, signal modifications, and pedestrian and bicycle circulation enhancements.

Although construction for the Third Street project isn’t scheduled until 2019-2020, San Rafael has begun to study the roadway to identify project scope and develop a preliminary plan. The city will spend 12 months to identify and evaluate potential projects, conduct outreach meetings with stakeholders and define project scope. Once scope is defined, funding will be requested for the preparation of preliminary engineering plans, permitting and environmental clearance, final engineering plans and construction.

The project is managed by the City of San Rafael Public Works Department.

In July 2019, TAM authorized $1M in Measure A project funding for preliminary engineering (PE), and environmental phases of the project, including public outreach.

In March 2016, TAM authorized $300,000 of Measure A funds to study the project area and identify project scope and feasibility.
